Hey guys,
Been following this forum for a long time.
A lot of questions have been answered. Thanks for that.
Currently in the process of a ground-up restoration of a '46 2N. This is my second one.
It's a challenge. Aquiring parts etc.
Just thought I'd jump in to the conversations.
Can't think of a question right now. But I'm sure I will!

Hey,
Thanks for the responses.
Including some "Before" pics.
My engine re-build kit should arrive tomorrow.
I've had the crank re-done. New oil pump/tube.
I re-built the hyd's.
Every piece/part/nut and bolt have been removed.
Pressure washed/varsalled/blasted/wire wheeled etc.
The shop that did my crank wants me to bring in the head. To the "naked eye" there is zero deflection (straight edge/flat surface).
Should I get them to machine it or leave it?
Going to "Lap" the valve seats myself.

WOW! Lots of progress already. Thanks for the pics. I like your choice of recovery rig too! A pic from 2002.

You don't want to surface the head if it doesn't really need it. Not much head to piston clearance & too frequently we see pistons hitting head & grinding required to regain clearance on surfaced heads. If flat within a couple thousandths, a good gasket/proper torquing will seal.
P.S. Looks like block may be later model than 1946 2N. I see left side generator mount bosses, don't I?

Why not have someone with the equipment recondition the seats like new,,, the hard work is already done,,,, The last few N engines I have rebuilt the seats were worn slap arse out,,, new seats were needed,,, 60 year cycle I spec....

Guess what,,, if the seats are shot the engine will probably need to come slap ares apart down to a bare block to cut the old seats out if it has seats...

Never have figgerd out why folks take such a gamble,,, a poor job on the valves wreck a hole lot of work,,, I could possibly see it if it was the first time the engine has been into but you never know how many times someone has ground away at them...

Valve work is just as important as any other spec on the engine,,, you mite look into that....

WARNING  all I know I read on the Internet,,, do it enuff and you can become a guru also,,, not responsible for damages,,, I read it and just pass it along,,, proceed with caution

I think if I went throu as much as you have already,I would take the head to the machine shop and atleast let them check it, for sure.
