Jube overcharging

At idle it barely charges... At 700RPM it goes to 12-15 amps and stays there. At higher revs it will go to 20+ amps briefly then back to 12-15. I removed the field wire from the regulator and the charging stopped.... bad regulator? This is my third out of the box bad regulator if that is the problem. would a faulty battery cause this ? Where are all those amps going ? The regulator does get hot but haven't seen any smoke.I'm lost Gary

sounds like field contacts in the reg are stuck.

bad bats can will cause overcharging.. but usually not that much.. that sure sound slike a full fielded unit..

Take it to a "mom&pop" starter-generator shop and they'll be able to figure it out easily, and fix it or sell you a good reg.---lha

I will take it off tomorrow and take it back to the generator shop. He has tested it twice and it checks out fine. He is a one man shop and been in business for forty years so he has o good reputation. I have to figure this out it"s a mystery. Gary

Check the voltage at the battery while it is charging that hard.
should be 7.2-7.4 for 6V or 14-14.5 for 12V.
The battery with the engine shut down, should check at 6.3 for 6V or 12.6 for a 12V.

Low voltage at the battery while charging or shut down means a shorted battery cell.

Higher than normal voltage when charging may mean a bad regulator, or a poor ground between the generator and regulator. Any resistance ,(poor ground) between the generator and regulator will send the regulator a false low voltage signal and cause overcharging.

Is there a way to check the resistance in the groung wire between genny and regulator? I have checked for continuity and that is fine.
