Jubilee NAA starter

We have a 53 Jubilee that the starter will not retract or release from the flywheel at times-seems to stick a lot. A friend said you should not lubricate the starter for fear of lubricating the clutch disc and getting slippage...any advice? The starter was a rebuilt a few years ago, just replace it? Tks!!

Check ring hear and starter drive teeth for burs it chewing, check relay engage wire and thumb start switch for shorts to chassis, clean starter shaft and drive gear with brake cleaner or similar, lube both ONLY with a dry film type lube like greaseless silicone spray, if the shaft it drive parts are rusty, they can hang
