Jubilee Steering Box Remove/Replace

I recently removed my steering wheel so that I could replace the bearing at the top of the steering shaft on my Jubilee. After I got the steering wheel off I noticed that the splines at the top of the shaft were almost completely rusted away. This was most likely due to the tractor sitting out in the weather for many years before I bought it.

I thought about buying a replacement steering shaft and nut but noticed that John Smith had refurbished steering boxes at an excellent price and bought one from him. John is a great guy and like many of you here at YT, I would like to meet in person.

My question has to do with removal and replacement of the steering box. Is it possible to remove and replace the steering box without having to disconnect my temperature gauge sensor from the cylinder head by slipping the instrument gauge panel over the steering shaft and supporting it while I slip the steering box down and out to one side? Has anybody done this successfully?

Thanks,
Billy

I have seen people support the tin and remove the draglinks and slip a box off. If your temp sender has enough give you could for sure slip the dash panel off. I did on my naa when i replaced the thrust bearings in her last year.

Soundguy,

Thanks for the speedy reply! Yes, I have plenty of slack in the line. Now I need to arrange for my "tin supporting" son to be available for this procedure! Father - Son bonding time!
