still no luck starting all new plugs (champion H12) wires dist.cap rotor condenser and points timing is good wires are new firing order 1243 order good spark. getting gas to new carb.i did have to drain gas tank bad gas. pulled drain plug out of carb. engine has125 psi compression on all cylinders .only thing didnt do was take carb apart to clean I did run a clean out tip cleaner up through small clean out port in bottom of the bowl. the plugs are not getting wet. will a plugged carb make engine backfire through carb? thanks for any and all help or suggestions

If you are backfiring through the carb you have timing off. Probably off at the plug wires in the position they go on or the distributor off a half turn. Firing order seems suspect to me though not a ford guy.

Try cranking with the coil wire disconnected.

If it still backfires, or more so a compression blow back through the carb, there is a valve problem. An exhaust valve not opening will cause that, and still have good compression.

While the coil is disconnected, hold your hand tightly over the carb intake horn and have an assistant give it a crank. Should get strong vacuum and hand wet with gas.

Vacuum and no gas, fuel delivery problem.

Weak, pulsating, no vacuum, valve problems.

Take a sample from the carb drain bowl. Should get a constant flow of fuel with the gas valve open, not a drip or stop flowing. Look at the sample, should be clean gas, no water or trash. Whatever is in the fuel is in the carb. Usually the bowl can be eased off, cleaned out and reassembled without parts. Pay particular attention to the main jet, clean it with a stiff wire.

Randy,
Did you dry time it the way I described on page 3?
IF plugs are dry, you need to take the carb apart and clean both idle and main jet.
What you did won't clean the carb's jets.

Did you get the metal clip back on the rotor?

There is a number 1 on rotor the cap. The cap will only go on one way..Is the rotor pointing to #1 when you dry timed the engine on TDC??

may be the advance that is under the plate that the points attaches to. if it is out of its proper place, it would cause this. take dist out. take points plate out,you will need to remove the gear to do this. you should see if the advance is in its slot or not. hope this helps.
