On a 2N when the tractor battery is COMPLETELY DEAD and using a 12V battery across the starter terminal and frame for ground will this supply juice to the spark plug wires or does the tractor battery have to have at least some reserve to complete the circuit?

In other words, does the 12V battery supply the ignition system while cranking or just provide for the starter to turn over?

That will only power the starter because juice won't be able to back-flow into the system unless the contacts in the solenoid are closed.

I wouldn't even bother trying to start it with a completely dead battery anyway, because once it starts it's going to put one hell of a load on the charging system.

hank you. The tractor has sat for a long time and would not start. I wondered if checking the spark at the plug while jumping with 12V would indicate that it was receiving current.

Will use the battery out of my NAA and probably have to put oil in the cylinders and let it set for a week.
