Hello everyone new to the site.
I just picked up a Ford 8N that has a 8 volt battery in it.
It still has the 6 volt system on it.
My question is can I remove that dead battery and start it up with a 12 volt battery temporarily just to see if runs.
Going to switch everything over later to a 12 syste.

Ford 8N with an 8V battery.
Fast cheat on a 6V system to give it a faster cold crank. Occasionally charge the battery with a stand alone charger.
6V stater will live with a 12V battery. AS LONG AS the engine is tuned and typically fires within 10 seconds of cranking. Mine does.
If it doesn't, stop cranking and let cool at least twice as long as the crank time. Cranking time should not exceed 30/45 seconds without a rest.
If your machine is still running a genny, jump it with 12 V going straight to the starter lug.
Neutral, Brakes locked, Fuel on, Key on.

Additionally, as soon as engine starts, the generator will cause a closing of the cut out contacts, thereby routing 12v to the VR coils and the generator.......none of which sounds good,, As Bruce said, if you keep 12v ONLY on the starter motor terminal, this is NOT a problem. Just don't jump to battery and hit starter sw.
