jumper start

Do not connect a 12 volt battery to a six volt battery! You can jump a tractor with a six volt system with a twelve volt battery the
following way. Make sure the tractor is in neutral. Block down the clutch. Turn the ignition on. Connect either side of the jumper battery to
the lug on the starter motor and the other lead to any convenient ground. This requires at least a partially charged 6 volt battery to power
the ignition.

Yes, you can use a jump box, the way you hook it up is just a little different. You have to have just a little "juice" in your 6v battery to run the ignition, then use the jump pack to turn the starter.. turn key on, put transmission in neutral, connect neg cable of jump pack to starter lug. Find a spot on the frame to connect the pos cable to, and once it touches, the starter will spin. See why transmission being in neutral is important? You are bypassing the starter switch by connecting directly to the starter and also avoiding damage to the ignition. Sorry, may not the best description of the process, but should get you the idea.

" Can I use my portable battery jump starter to start my 6 volt positive ground Jubilee?"

Yes, but see tip # 43 first. Otherwise, as others have said, you can blow up a battery.

See tip # 50 to check the battery.

If your battery is weak, put it on a charger. (see tip # 60)

You need a strong battery to:

1. Close the solenoid

2. Spin the starter

3. Engage the bendix

4. Provide voltage to the coil.

As the battery gets weaker, the first thing to fail is your spark. If the battery is almost totally dead, all you will hear is the solenoid clicking.

In addition to charging the battery, chances are you need new cables as well (tip # 41). And, don't forget to clean all the grounds, to include the mating area between the starter & the block.

The more current you use to spin the starter, the less you have for the ignition.

when i charge my 6volt batteries, first, my charger has a specific seleter for 6 volt, some dont, then i remove the battery cables charge the battery, then re attach the cables, seems to work fine, that way and nothing gets melted

You've already gotten the answer from Harold and Bruce so I won't repeat it but will add to be cautious and be certain the tractor is in NEUTRAL when you jump your tractor from a 12-volt car or truck. If left in gear, it will still start when jumping starting. When charging a battery, you always connect red (positive) to red (positive) and black (negative) to black (negative), doesn't matter if positive or negative ground, you want the polarity to be correct from charger to battery. I usually disconnect the battery cables and take the battery inside the barn to charge if I can so I can check the specific gravity with a hydrometer at full charge. A lot of fellas use battery tenders to maintain their full charges too. It's also a good idea to fire it up every few weeks and if it's going to set more than 30 days, start and run it good, especially if it is outside. If so. keep it tarped so water and snow don't get in so easily.
