Jumping my 6 volt...

27 degrees here today and bless her heart, my 1950 8n just didn"t want to start. Turned over fast enough at first but, finaly wore down. I have a charger for 6 volt, but that takes a while. Then I could jump it with my 12 volt pickup. Either way, my tractor is positive ground ( as you well know). If I use the charger, how do I hook it up, cables on, off? Same for the jump from truck, 12 volt to 6? Just want to get her started without hurting anything. Got a little blading to do and hauling in some wood but, it depends on her. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Well whenever I jump my pos ground tractor from a 12v battery , I run neg cable from the truck to the bolt on the starter . Then take the pos cable from truck & make contact on the foot rest of the tractor . It'll make her dance . Just be sure the key is turned on , throttle set & choke if needed . As soon as it starts , remove the pos cable from the foot rest . When using a battery charger , be sure to set it at 6v & hook cables accordingly : pos to pos & neg to neg . HTH! God bless, Ken

By jumping straight to the starter you are not and should not use the starter button.

Actually polarity does not matter when jumping straight to the starter. One cable to the starter post the other to the foot rest.
Be real sure that the tractor is in neutral lest it run over you. And DO NOT push the starter button You want to keep the 12 volts outa the 6 volt parts of your tractor.

Like I said-- Be Sure The Tractor Is In NEUTRAL.If it is in gear and you jump it to the starter and frame like you have to do to keep the 12 volts out of the rest of your electrical system--In gear and it cranks, you are very likely DEAD.

Hook up your 6 volt charger to your 6 volt battery + to + and - to -. It is a good idea to not let the charger set on the metal of the tractor in case the negative terminal is grounded to the case. To jump start a 6 volt tractor with a 12 volt battery follow this procedure. First, MAKE SURE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL, turn key on, connect one 12 volt jumper (+ or -) to FRONT bolt of solenoid, connect other 12 volt jumper to good clean no paint ground connection. Starter will spin as soon as second 12 volt jumper is connected. Remove this second 12 volt jumper as soon as tractor starts. This will only work if 6 volt battery has enough charge to provide spark to points.

You have two problems: it won't start & you don't know how to jump it.

Check out tip # 43 for info on jumping it. As the others have said, make sure it is in neutral.

When you ask a question here, it’s usually a good idea to tell us:

1. The model of your tractor (2N, 9N, 8N, NAA, etc).

2. If it is 6v or 12v.

3. If it’s an N, if the distributor is on the front or side of the engine.

4. If it has any major parts that are not OEM, such as electronic ignition, a side coil on a front distributor, etc.

Troubleshooting is different depending on the model of the tractor, voltage, ignition system & distributor placement.

We know you have a 6v 8N. Tell us the distributor placement & plenty of folks can you get it started in cold weather.
