Found this weld on the lift cover when I removed the seat on my $150 parts 850.
Think its useable?
By the way, is the cover cast iron or steel?

What weld I see casting flows but no weld. When a part is cast they have funny lines etc but are not welds and all I see is simple casting where they did not get it prefect. Oh by the way it is cast iron and that is why it is so heavy

blindhawg,

I can't answer your question, but just wanted to say, it looks like a weld line to me that has been cleaned up with a grinder. BOL.

A cassting line would not extend across the machined pad where the seat sits. This lift cover has suffered a major crack for whatever reason and looks to have been repaired skillfully. It probably is OK.

Long as it moves freely I wouldn't worry about it. Clearly been welded with some type of NiRod.

It's cast iron, BH.

Why not just use the lift cover casting from your non parts tractor?

ep, looks like it has been working & well tested since the repair!

Yeah that's a nice looking nickle weld. Guy that did that may be long ago retired from the look of the rust. If it's been working for that time, it should keep on working.

But what I wonder is what the heck caused it to crack in the first place?

What good is skill without creativity and vision??? :)

(yes i read about the generous use of welds--thus the joke)
