Just weighting around

I remember weighing hog carcasses with this thing after they were cut in half. It was used only to satisfy our curiosity of what the hog weighed - not for sale purposes. We'd have the hog hanging on a gambrel stick and would saw the hog down the center of the backbone as best we could. My father in law would grab the half that dropped, saying that half was his, ha. Those were the good old days. It's been 35 years since we've had a hog on the place. I remember stepping out on dark nights and hearing hog feeder lids banging in every direction. Every little farm had hogs, but no more. I kinda miss the smell of a fattening pen.

I can close my eyes today and hear those lids from every summer night 50+ years ago banging shut,,,, and the occasional hog argument. gm

Me too, sometimes I can still hear it. We would shell out a pickup load of corn about once a week. We had our own sheller, an Ottawa but took the corn to town to get it ground. It was a good day when we got a dime at the elevator to buy a coke to split. Shoveled a lot of ear corn into that old Ottawa. My cousin and I got excited when dad bought us new aluminum scoops. Anybody else eat the molasses balls out of the ground feed?

The increments stamped in 8 lbs per long mark are interesting to me as it is not the more standard of 5/10/15 etc.

Did eight lb increments have any significance back when that scale was made?

(quoted from post at 11:28:18 09/25/22) Two pound marks might have been more useful than 2 1/2 pound or 1 1/4 pound marks.
have two similar scales, but not marked in 8s and no sharp hook. These hung on a pole off the side of cotton trailer, to weigh cotton sacks. Still have a bonnet & sack to go with scales.
