key for a 4000

My same original lucas key for my 1975 ford 5000 fits my 2002 NH 7610s.

It's a thousand series thing.

Ford used the same key in all of their US/British derived tractors from 1965 until the end of the 10 series and 30 series runs in the late 90's. Basically, if the tractor has the round barrell type Lucas ignition switch, that's the key it uses. If it's got the sealed unit like the 40 series uses, then it takes a different key.
The old British Leyland's used the same Lucas ignition and key...
For what it's worth, a small common screwdriver, a bent nail and a few other objects will roll that barrell over and start one. I seldom remove the keys.

No, the early (4-cylinder) 4000's use a different key than the newer (3-cyl.)models. Both keys are available at NH dealers.
Those two keys will start pretty much any Ford with a factory ignition.

Funny, my 4600 and 5600 have very different keys and both have New Holland switches. One actually looks like a key (4600) and the other just has two points and is much shorter (5600).

I can swap keys between my 4600 (1980), 5100 ('68) 5200 ('69), 7100 ('75), 7600 ('77), and TW35 ('89). The 5100, 6600 row crop, 9600 and both 3000's that I've sold or traded all used the same key, too. Sounds like your 4600 has a newer-style switch.

They both have been replaced, I replaced them with parts from the local CNH dealer. They work fine, it's just odd to me that they are different.

I'll bet the 4600 has a Lucas switch from a Ford industrial tractor used from the mid '70's to the late '80's.
