The two photos are of a situation that you DON'T want to see. The gap in the top is due to the disintegration of the king-pin thrust bearing. If these bearings are in a bad way the extra effort needed to turn the steering wheel should certainly be noticed if the tractor does not have PAS. You have metal to metal contact.
The best way to check for KP wear is to remove it. There are likely to be worn areas on the KP where the bushes run. You can measure the amount of wear on the KP. Place an unworn part of the KP in each bush and determine the amount of slack. Ideally there should be a free running fit without any play. If you decide to replace the bushes the axle will have to be reamed out to the spindle size plus clearance using the special in-line MF reamer. These photos are of a UK MF 240.
