What Bill said, but it was to be used with a hydraulic (cylinder) plow that would have a spring hitch, not a release hitch. The idea was to disengage the clutch and stop the tractor rather than releasing the plow and damaging the hoses or losing hydraulic fluid. In reality it often happened when the operators knee was in a unfortunate spot, hence the name.
