I have a 1962 641 a buddy told me to add sea foam to engine oil to clean up ran a little while and changed oil and filter. After i did this it knocks on start up til oil pressure startes to show no longer than 5 seconds then goes away any ideas Thanks

Seafoam is alcohol and that is abrasive so you may have scared a rod bearing by doing that. I would drop the pan and check the rod bearings I bet you will find at least one that is a tad bit loose

That was really not a good idea, I would suspect you scored a rod bearing. You can use diesel if you needed to clean because it has lubricity.

From the Seafoam product web site:

SEA FOAM Motor Treatment is a [b:5c102c5302]petroleum based product[/b:5c102c5302] that helps clean internal fuel and oil system components. SEA FOAM is an EPA-registered product, and [b:5c102c5302]will not harm engine components[/b:5c102c5302], seals, gaskets, catalytic converters or oxygen sensors.

Depends on which sea form was used from what I have seen they have one for fuel and one for oil me I will NEVER use either one. As for it being alcohol again from what I have heard and been told it is in fact alcohol and naphtha

You're entitled to your opinion and your own decision to never use their products, but please don't spread false information.

Sea Foam Motor Treatment is a single product that is recommended for treating both engine oil and fuel. It is 100% petroleum based.

They do make another product called Sea Foam Trans Tune specifically for adding to automatic transmissions or power steering to clean deposits in those systems, and it is also 100% petroleum based.

Does not matter since in this case he still needs to drop the pan before he throws a rod out the side of the block. A knock like he says he has will in fact lead to bigger problems and I know you know that so why not answer him with what will help him instead of jacking with me????????????????????

I never much believed in mechanic in a can, but I will say Sea Foam has done wonders for me, especially in my chain saws, weed whips, and two cycle engines. I dont believe for a minute it caused your problem, nor do I believe it can fix your problem.

Old, the knocking noise could be a dry bearing as you say, and your advice to drop the pan and check it out is good advice.

However, people have grown to believe everything that they read on the internet, and because of that your bad information about Sea Foam is just as bad as your advice about the bearing is good. If no one corrects bad information like that in the context of the thread where it was originally posted, then many people in the future may believe it.

And again instead of answering me you answer his post which does not help him and also put me in a place that it appears to him that your attacking me and not helping him

Seafoam has some mineral oil in it,they call it pale oil.The alcohol and naptha content make it bad news in a crank case.

What king of oil pressure do you carry when:
-cold idle start
-hot idle
Worn bearings will show a distinct drop in idle pressure from cold to hot.

Are you using the same brand/PN of oil filter? Is it a spin on oil filter? and perhaps it does not have the drain back check valve.

Cut the oil filter apart with a hack saw and see if it has a drain back valve and if there is bearing flakes (aluminum foil type) in the filter.

It is pretty quick and painless to drop the pan and plasti gauge the bearing clearance.

I am betting the engine knocks because the oil filter empties overnight. I also bet if you shut it off, wait 5 minutes it does not.

My personal preference is the canister type filter and not the cartridge. It allows you to inspect the element pretty closely.

When oil pressure comes up its 62 psi and stays there all day.if i shut it off after warming up the knock is gone

I had an '88 302 Ford truck mileage less than 100k, well cared for, and every time I changed the oil, even though I filled the filter with oil, it would tick for a bit initially while the oil circulation was being established.

I changed to synthetic oil and never heard it again.

Marvel Mystery oil has been around for years and is also a crankcase solvent even though it's name sake says oil. What these things do is dissolve crud. If you have been running a cruded up engine for years, like used to happen with non-detergent oils then you could have some wear, probably do being a 641 that was quiet because of the crud but the SF washed it out and now you hear the slop caused by the wear, not a result of damage caused by it.

When HD oil first came out consumers were warned about putting it in an old engine that had been run on ND oil for the same reason.

HTH,
Mark

62psi is very very high for an N series tractor to have. Could well be why you do not hear the knock when it is warmed up due to the pressure being so high a rod can not knock with that type of pressure. If I where you I would drop the pan and be 100% sure
