Kohler K181S

Is your K181S battery ignition or magneto ignition?

There were many varieties of the K181 engines.

If you're not sure or don't know which type you have, post all of the Kohler engine numbers and I may be able to help.

It is a magneto ignition. On a JD 110 lawn tractor. I will have the rest of the numbers this afternoon.
I have posted on the garden tractor forum also.

Yes, you should be able to use this, google and check it out, says it works with magnetos, ect. "https://www.ebay.com/itm/ELECTRONIC-TRANSISTORIZED-IGNITION-MODULE-for-Small-Engine-Motor/251965998793?hash=item3aaa5806c9:g:TA8AAOSwKrhVW2Zf

I discovered this afternoon the mag coil is open. To replace it the mag and the alternator coils are one unit.So what I am going to do is go with a automotive coil and use the existing points. The alternator section still works. Thanks for every ones help.

That is what I was going to suggest if you had magneto ignition.

Be careful because you may have to change the ignition switch. ....The ignition is grounded thru the case of the switch when the key is OFF if you have magneto ignition.

The key switch for battery ignition disconnects (interrupts)battery power going to the coil.

Don - Check out the POINTS SAVER by KIRK ENGINES. It's a solid state ignition that only uses extremely low voltage thru the points to trigger the electronic ignition on Kohler K-series engines. No need for a condenser, just need points and a coil. Read the instructions carefully. I know Dave Kirk well, he makes good stuff.

Ordered Tuesday here today. Now that's service.
