Kohler K341

Is there any dual shaft (both front and rear PTO) 16-20 HP engine available to replace this old Kohler? The tractor (MF/Snapper 1650) was missing the engine when I got it. A single shaft engine will give me a choice of running the tractor or the mower, not both. Thank you for any leads or ideas.

I don?t know if they still do, but at one tome Koehler offered stub-shafts that bolted to the flywheel to make them dual shafts

I'm not familiar with how the eng on 1650 drives loads, goto ebay and search 123357748764,this might be what you're looking for to solve your problem, while there also search kohler stub shaft as several style stub shafts are listed, however I don't know which other one's will fit the K series eng, you'll have to check sellers listing.I've seen these flywheel stub shafts on many industrial/garden tractor setup's,to my knowledge these are nla from kohler and are getting hard to come by,I have one sitting on shelf for 14 yrs(for just in case) that was removed from a K341 eng which I bought from a junk yard that was used on a tanker trailer transfer pump.

Check this link : /www.partselect.com/Models/1650/MFGModelNumber/80424/Sections/Engine-Mounting/?ModelID=4023542&ModelNum=1650&mfgModelNum=80424&ManufactureID=143&Selected=1650A_WW_7.gif&Position=7&mfg=Snapper&Type=Lawn-Tractor&Mark=7
According to the link, it used an electric clutch. Not a sub shaft as you think.

Might look up Small Engine Warehouse, they offer many repower engines for older machines and they have information about the original engines that were in them

This engine in my John Deere is a trans plant from a Simplicity or A/C. It's got a flange bolted in the flywheel for a driveshaft I guess and then the pto shaft on the other side.

Think about it: An electric clutch without a way to turn it is just a hunk of iron. I have seen a running MF1650 with a K341 Kohler engine. The engine PTO drives the mower attachment via an electric clutch. The tractor is driven off the flywheel end with a stub shaft.

Kohler offers a flywheel pto kit for some of its Command engines. It consisted of a flanged shaft that bolted to the flywheel as well as the flywheel screen with a hole in it for the shaft to go through. There was also a horizontal shaft Kawasaki with the flywheel pto option, but I don't think that engine is in production any longer.

An engine intended for a Toro 500 series mower would almost ideal. The last one I remember swapping into a Simplicity (Actually it said Massey Ferguson on the hood, but was made by Simplicity on the serial tag.) The Kohler rep. recommended an engine for a Steiner Tractor. I did have to remove some of the ducting for the Steiner muffler, because I was re-using the Simplicity muffler.

Of course, you would still have to hook your drive shaft up to the flywheel and find a clutch to fit the regular pto shaft on the other end of the engine as well as work out the electical connections, and the exhaust/muffler.

Thanks for the lead. That stub shaft is probably just what I need, IF I could find the K342/321 engine it fits. I guess I'm working from both directions on this project: Find an engine then a shaft to fit, or find a shaft and then an engine it fits. I'm discovering why this MF1650 has been sitting many years with no engine.

The shafts Kohler once sold probably fit the engines they once sold, the operative word being once, as in NLA. My problem is no engine - nothing under the hood. I'm learning far more than I ever wanted to know about this little tractor - what an adventure! So far I've not been able to discover if the different engines available (Honda, B&S, Predator, etc.) have stub shafts available, or even if the flywheel is set up to bolt a home-made one on.

The stub shaft bolts to the flywheel to drive the tractor drive shaft, generally all brands have a different size stub shaft.I'd just be looking for a replacement
motor that came in the MF 1650.Where are you located I have several of those for parts that have good motors.Same motor as in an Ariens and some other garden tractors.

I think you'll find stub shafts are available for all the engines you mentioned. I have had Kohler K series and Commands, Brigg Vanguards, Onan and Hondas in the last couple of years that had them installed. I think the older K had the same bolt pattern as the Command series.

The last Command shaft I needed was found on eBay, a lot cheaper than new. They are common listings there.

An original K341 Kohler is the engine I've been looking for. I am in the middle of Washington State, once the Apple Capital of the World. We've never had an Ariens dealer, and the one place that sold Snapper and Simplicity only had them for about a year, selling very few. We had many small Ford, Ferguson, and John Deere orchard tractors, but never any of these small "Estate Tractors." I'd be interested in a complete engine with stub shaft, and an electric clutch. An exhaust system would be nice, but like other external parts, can be fabricated. Where are you located?

Thank you for the lead. I've been watching Ebay and Craigslist, but need to match the engine to the shaft, or the shaft to the engine. I may have to bite the bullet and buy an engine and hope to find a shaft. I'll need an electric clutch too, so shaft size will be another consideration. In my dreams there is a lawn tractor bone yard - but so far, only in my dreams.

The tractor data website says it was made by Snapper.
If you want an original type engine, you would need a K341 engine
with the same spec number as the original.
You should be able to find a stub shaft on the auction site.

Thank you for the information. I am painfully aware that it needs a K341 Kohler. The problem is they are apparently on the same shelf as hen's teeth.

The Kohler Magnum 16 would be the same engine with electronic ignition and squared-off engine shroud.
There's a guy on the weekend freedom machine site that has one available.
It is from a John Deere so it would have a one inch crank shaft PTO and
would have the mounting tabs cast into the lower sides of the block.
A Kohler K321 would also fit and has 14 horsepower.

Thank you Steve, for the information. I have an M16 in my Walker mower, and it is the same - except: the Walker drives off the flywheel end, and because of the tight fit, there is NO PTO on the other end. I know it's only that particular type number, but it sure looks strange. I do appreciate the links to Weekend Freedom Machine and the Snapper forum. Every bit of information helps.
