KTA magneto

I have a non-running (as in stuck) KTA that has a AB MJC-C magneto on it. Is this the correct mag? If it isn't, will the AB work?

Any KTA I have seen used a American Bosch U4. Most were changed over to a FM base mount due to unreliability of U4.

If it's the correct rotation with 35 degree impulse and base mount will work. KT & KTA used CW and CCW drive mags depending on what your engine needs you might have the wrong one. The impulse on your AB MJC may or may not be reversible. The MJC was not that great a mag either and some parts are hard to find for them now. Better replacements for MMs with base mount mags were the Fairbanks Morse large body mags, FM-K, O, OR, XOR, & Z and American Bosch MJB, MJA, or MRF mags. The last of the KTA made came with a FM mag and early ones originally used Bosch U4 or FU4.

According to an original MM-Twin City parts book:

The American Bosch U-4 was used on engine numbers 525001 to 525445 and again from numbers 525476 to 529308.

The Bosch ZR-4 was used briefly on engine numbers 525446 to 525475.

The Fairbanks-Morse RV-4 was used on engine numbers 529309 and after.

The switchover from the U-4 to the RV-4 occurred very early in 1937 production.

Like the other guy's, I"ve heard the U-4 was not a very good magneto.

Hope this helps,

Tim
