land plane

I want to build my own land plane. There are plenty of pictures and videos that should make it pretty simple to build. I don't think there are too many critical measurements or angles so that anything close will probably work just fine. What I have not been able to determine from the pictures is the depth of the cutting edge below that of the side shoes. I'm guessing maybe 1". Does that sound about right or am I way off?

A Reynolds plane. The best there is. One can make a 'pool table' with one of those.

Put the side skirts even with the blade. If they are up higher than the blade,it will leave a little pile/ridge of dirt between every pass.There are several 'types' of planes. The Reynolds shown in SV's video is probably the best. The Eversman,JohnDeere folding type ate probably the most common.The newer 3 point types do a good job,but they take a pretty good 'horse' to pull .An older neighbor once made one by hanging a box blade underneath an old truck frame. Put the blade in about the middle,the wheels in back and used the three point drawbar to regulate depth. Worked pretty good as he used it for several years.

A land plane really isnt designed to move a lot of dirt. It just fills holes and shaves off ridges created by normal tillage practices.They make the flat smooth surface needed for flood or furrow irrigation.Leveling/planeing is the last pass/operation before planting.Every farm here has a land plane of some sorts as every acre plowed will get planed before planting.I own an Eversman #4012(40 ft long,12ft wide).My turbo 706(95 horse) can pull it,but if I really sink it,it can stop my 1456.

Find a good used one. Cheaper than trying to build one.

I built a six foot wide plane for smoothing the tractor pulling tracks. I used snow plow cutting edges for the blades and I mounted them an inch below the sides. It didn't have shoes for it to ride on, it rode on the blades. The sides served to only hold some dirt available to fill in the low places. It works well but even at an inch higher the sides wear down fairly fast so I put hard-facing on them.

I think 1" is on the shallow side. I would go closer to 2" or at least 1.5" What are you going to use to pull it?

My Land Pride plane's blades are adjustable from even with the side panels to 1 1/2" below. I't came set a 1/4" -1/2" below and I haven't messed with it, I do plan to raise the left side to even with the side for making a crown in the road

A little clumsy but it did the job.

Just wondering if anyone could post a pic of a tumble/title bug). Im wanting to build a pond and saw mention above that it was used for that purpose but an internet search brought up a round bale mover?? Thanks.
