Late 8N steering box lube problem

As part of a major rebuild of my late model 8N, we rebuilt the steering box, which was near perfect to start with, but it ended up with a slight leak out of the right hand sector shaft. I finally got around to replacing the seal and discovered only one seal rather than 2, I'll blame my buddy for leaving out one.

Now, when I tried to refill it, (yes, through the proper bolt hole) I can't seem to get any lube in. I even took a shorter bolt, drilled a hole through it the same od of some tygon tubing and the spout of a 90 wt gear oil bottle. Not with gravity feed or pressure on the bottle did it seem to take any. The bolt hole acts like it is a blind hole. Anyone experience this?

How did you get the oil in when you rebuilt it? Easy to check the bolt hole.

easonable question. My buddy finished it up and has done a million jobs since and does not remember.
Easy to check the bolt hole? In what manner? I probed it with a wire and find no obvious path into the box.

If it is an aftermarket (sparex) steering gearbox it will have a fill plug on the top left of the body of the box pointing to the left. It will be hidden by the dash support unless someone has made an access hole for it.

You could always take the steering wheel off and pour oil down the column.

Can you post a photo of the hole that you are trying to use? I use one on the right side, actually I put a zerk fitting in it and use corn grease in it. if I remember I will take camera out to shop and get a photo.

a bit hard to tell which bolt but maybe this will help you. zerk fitting for corn head grease.

if it's a late box, use that hole that RG pictured with the grease fitting.

PS.. I'd also reccomend that NLGI 0 or 00 grease vs oil. Ford put out a engineering update when the 00/01 series were out
calling for greases not oils to prevent loss of steering lube.

t is not an aftermarket box. It is a VERY low hour tractor and the 3rd one I have owned. I bought the first one in 1972! I sold that one a couple of years ago in an auction, and have owned the present one many years as well. The bolt hole I am using is the one called out in the owners manual on the right side and the F04 manual. I did remove the steering wheel, but had no luck there either. I don't think there is a path there as I recall. I thought about using corn head grease, but with perfect seals I did not see the necessity.

I left out the fact that the bolt hole is the same one I used on the other late model 8N's I have owned. (right hand side, captures sheet metal.)
