Lawn roller questions

Going to be pulled behind Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor (Not Garden Tractor).

1.) Poly or Steel?

2.) Brand Name?

3.) Size?

4.) Any other suggestions / opinions?

Thanks in advance..

1.) Poly or Steel?
Poly if filling with water. Steel if using sand.

2.) Brand Name?
Many good brands on the market. Buy the best one that you can afford. If use will be limited to once or twice a year. A mid range one will do fine.

3.) Size?
As wide or a few inches wider than your tractors track width (width from outside left to outside right tire). But keep the total weight within range of your tractors max tow limit.

4.) Any other suggestions / opinions?
Not sure what your purpose is wanting to compact the top 1 to 2" of your lawns soil. Rolling a lawn can cause more damage than good. Due to restricting aeration, water aborbtion and root compaction. . If it is for stripping. A lot of better methods can be found.

Second the Ohio Steel. I have a 24" x 48" that weighs 920 lbs. when filled with water. It does a good job behind my JD X500 garden tractor (I previously pulled it with my JD 175 Hydro.

What your tractor can pull depends a lot on how hilly your ground is. Remember that at the optimum time for rolling the ground is often soft or muddy affecting traction.

Just a giggle factor. It is so funny when the neighbor forgets to drain the water out of his roller... You can guess what happens next year when he tries to fill it with water. Yup.

I have the Ohio Steel 24" x 48" 920lbs. I pull it with a lawn tractor. Its not real heavy but will flatten gopher mounds, not so much with livestock or vehicle ruts. I mainly bought it to seed grass with. My lawn tractor is not real heavy and doesn't like moving it on inclines and the turf tires don't grip much either, but mostly level ground is not a big deal.

I made a lawn roller using a 500 gallon tank only to learn the tanks metal wasn't strong enough. So I lined the tank with concrete, leaving inside hollow. I can add 250 gallons of water to tank. Empty roller weighs 4500#. Tank is about 5 ft wide. So my roller has about 900# weight per ft length. In early spring when frost leaves ground soft roller can flatten it. However when ground is dry roller will flatten mole hills. Moles will laugh at me and next day will show me what they do best.

If I fill my tank with 250 gallons of water I'll spin tractor tires when I have to go uphill.

You have to pull my roller with a tractor, not a lawn mower. This pic was my rental property, soil is stick to your boots clay. When its wet, roller will squeeze water out of the soil. The spots with no grass used to be mole hills.
