My 51 N just missed the proof meter. I wanted a tack to adjust the idle and the governor. DUnk recommended a lcd tack. EMCO makes a little one for $18. You wrap the lead around a spark plug and instant removable tack or you can install permanently easily--has hour meter to. Sure is handly. My idle was 800 RPMs, twice what it should be. Sounded slow to me. My governor stopped at 2,000, a little low. With the idle lowered I can properly adjust the carb and am confidant on the max speed. Great cheap tool. Thanks Dunk for the idea.

Hi Matt--

Thats a great price. The only ones that Ive seen have been fron tiny tach. I did a google searce on EMCO and couldnt find it. Could you post more details on it ? Maybe an address or web site?

ditto the other poster.. post the model, id number and link.. I've seen some lawnmower tachs.. but most are int he 40$ range.. 18$ sounds much better.. might buy one just to check rpm on all my non tach machines..

if installing permanently, remember not recommended for at or near freezing temps.

I have one of their hour meters and it works great. The wire lead simply wraps around a spark plug wire. When it senses juice it starts the clock.

Is it possible your wire lead is too close to another spark plug wire and it is double reading the rpms?

The name is ENMCO,not EMCO,I finally found it after a short while so anyone looking will now know.---lha

Digital Tach

I installed this same tach/hr meter on my '49 8N and the only trouble I had was from induction cross-firing into the sparkplug lead I was sensing on from other cylinders. I remedied my problem by removing the sparkplug wire I was sensing on from the central tube and rerouted it around the left side of the engine away from all other wires. Now she reads just fine. I permanently mounted mine but in retrospect wish I hadn't. The display is too small for my weak eyes to read while operating the tractor and because of where I mounted it I almost have to dismount the tractor to be able to see it adequately. Simple marks on the throttle quadrant suffice just fine for relative rpm settings and I KNOW how many hours are on the machine....the same number that are on my tookus.
