Leak on John Deere R Starting Engine

I have a John Deere Model R that has an oil leak at about the point where the starting engine sits on the diesel engine. I suspect the gasket at the base of the starting engine that is supposed to keep the oil in the starting engine. I suppose it could be the rear main seal on the starting engine. I intend to test this by not running the tractor. If it is the rear main seal, I think the leak should eventually stop. If it is the base gasket, the oozing will continue. Is this a good way to narrow the problem down? I have seen several R's with this problem. Do you have any suggestions on how to make sure this problem doesn't return? Thanks.

Mine developed a leak there as well. Found that the bolts holding the pony to the engine were loose. Torqued them down and seems to have resolved the problem.
