leaking fuel tank

This may seem like a not to smart question but I have a 1750 gasser that has a small leak in the bottom of the tank near the water trap. I have seen posts here to use a liquid liner/sealant but my question is, can I just use enough that it covers the area of the trap or should I line the entire tank? Would this work?

If it's right near the trap due to a joint being tweaked or stressed, then I suggest a local epoxy built for the job, 'speshly if you can dab some on both sides of the leak.
If the tank is tender from rust/corrosion then a POR-15 fuel tank sealer kit might be in your future.

I have seen several oliver fuel tanks with the water trap leak because they were never drained or at least not often enough, We took them off, drained completely turned them upside down on a bucket and covered the leaking and sometimes porous area of the trap with solder.A lot of work but a permanent fix if done right.

here is what I have done, you can take off the whole water trap with a chisel, this will leave just the bottom of the tank. there is a hole in the bottom of the tank that will take a 3/8 pipe. put in a 3/8 brass nipple with some JB weld and then put a sediment bowl on the nipple.

Clean it up good and cover it with SealAll.

SealAll X2. I patched a rust leak on an Olds tank just above the flange while the gas was still seeping. It held for a couple of years.
