Leaking gas cap 1948 Cub

Can anybody tell me a good brand name of a replacement gas cap and a good place to buy one? My old one leaks gas all over my tank. Also, what octane fuel is best to run in a 1948 Cub and a 1955 Cub Lo Boy? Thanks, Lou

IHC used to have a program for free Gas caps.
They might still have it.

I just used that about a mounth ago and the new cap for my Super C came in within ~10 days.

I cut new gaskets out of sheet cork. Those tall
safety caps look weird on our old tractors.....

The short caps are a fire hazard.

I can't remember exactly why. Either it's because they let the fuel slosh out, or the vent gets plugged and the pressure builds up. Regardless, the end result is a concentrated cloud of fuel vapor, which in the presence of a hot-enough manifold or open flame, goes WHOOOM! and leaves you a crispy critter.

The tall triple-baffle caps prevent fuel sloshing out for sure, and the vent design is more difficult to plug than the dirt-dauber-sized hole in the short caps.

come on ANY other equipment ? I started my career
in a Rental Yard in 1968 , and have fueled up a
million different kinds of equipment , I've never
seen one OEM use any cap even similar to that. It
was clearly designed to satisfy a lawyer in a law
suit , not to be of any particular value to a
consumer ....

The triple vented tall cap helps a lot as far as leaking fuel. Having started working on them in 1958 I have seen a lot of them leaking from the vent holes not the gasket.

Make sure the tank opening is not your problem. There is a tool to straighten the opening if damaged by funnels or the old 5 gallon cans in the past.

Probably because the other OEMs didn't lose the same type of law suits that IH lost over fuel fires. :?

Yep been there and done that, unless you remove the cork gasket right away YOU WILL BE SORRY, the cork disintegrates and falls into the tank and clogs the outlet. I didn't like the looks of the tall cap either but after constant fuel leakage on my nicely painted tractor and trying about 4 diffeernt types of gasket materials I applied for the new free cap and now it looks beautiful no more leaks and stains.

Apparently you don't consider, "not receiving 3rd degree burns in a fuel fire" value to the consumer.

I haven't tried to make a comparison because I don't own any other brand, but I think the "low" caps on other brands of tractors vented differently, if they vented at all, from the IH cap.

The original low IH cap looks like it pretty much just has a hole drilled in the middle for venting. Other brands may have dedicated vents elsewhere on the tank, or a different style of baffled vent in the cap that was patented at the time. We all know how IH just loved to pay patent royalties...

I used that ih gas cap recall site back in May I got 2 one for my h which I could read serial number tag and one for a c which I could not read the tag just put serial number un readable for the C and it came too
