Learning things

Today I learned that an M and a SuperMTa use different shift forks. So I'm swapping the forks from the MTA top cover to the M top cover. The SMTA top cover is damaged,so the M cover will be used.So far, that is the only 'hiccup' I experienced.By the time this project is done,I'm going to be fairly intimate with these old tractors. LOL

I know you are combining 3 tractor into one. It sounds like you are trying to swap covers between a regular M and a Super MTA. How close have you looked at the differences and measurements between the 2 covers are you certain they will interchange?

The two covers look slightly different. . But I have had the M cover on. That's how I discovered the forks are different. But I'm sure it will bolt right on.There have also been a fewother differences. But they have all bolted up.

Ok, sounds good. Just did not want you to go to all the effort swapping the forks and then get to the ..I thought it would work.. point. Sounds like you did the studying for you final exams. I am not real familiar with the MTAs. I just knew there were a lot of changes for the live power and of course the TA.

Yeah, I learned the hard way that the 4-bolt offset taper-bolt plate thing in the drive train of the H Farmall, can be isntalled two ways; with minimum space in there, and with maximum space. DO NO INSTALL it with the minimum space; the end of the drive shaft will not fit into the pilot bearing, and the drive shaft will whip around and destroy many expensive things.

Memory is getting rusty but just in case It remembers this you may want to make sure top cover seals where transmission offsets near brake pedals. Later covers had more meatal in that area. Casting number on the SMTA and later SM was 357141R3. For some reason parts books listed the old 4-digit top cover number up through the SMTA. On tractors the 357141R1 was showing up on later M tractors. Think IH changed top cover gaskets once or twice after SMTA started. Another thing that may interest is 400 shift forks have the same number on fork part as a SMTA but rail part is different because shifter hole is more forward than the SMTA.
