Started an advanced search on ebay for a heavy duty sewing
machine.

This is what came up, not sure it strong enough for sewing
straps.

Does anyone have a singer 4411? I like the price of a new one.
Seems like there are more singer models. Not sure about the
antique ones.

This will sound strange, but there is a fellow that runs an RV repair shop, in Lebanon MO. His number is: (417) 664-6462 and he has 3 or 4 older machines that he uses to make saddle bags, purses etc. He may have some good advice for you or may know where one is for sale. His name is Glenn.

I'm a fan of the "antique" Singer all metal gear drive machines.

That being said, you can buy the model 4411 cheaper from Amazon or the Singer website direct sales store.

I bought a similar model on Ebay, the Singer 4423. It's a good solid machine and a very good value. It works well for regular sewing. However I haven't put it to the test yet with heavy material (I need to get some heavy duty needles and thread and an appropriate project). I have no doubt ,though, that it would do the job. If you mave up to a true commercial or industrial sewing machine the price, new or used, the price really jumps. Of course the Singer 4400 series is made in China.

When you say straps does not indicate the thickness. I bought a heavy duty sewing machine advertised to sew leather. It sure will sew a leather coat but not a leather horse halter. If you want to sew harness strap thickness material look at (industrial leather sewing machine) and check how thick it will sew thru.

I bought one a few years ago to sew leather. It's a Consew Industrial model. I forgot the model number. It works good.

Found it at a 2nd hand store and paid $50. Took it to a sewing machine repair shop to have them go through it and adjust timing and make sure everything is working. They charged $50.

Many of the true commercial machines have external motors. You buy the machine and then install it in a full blown sewing table. Then a driver motor goes underneath. We have half a dozen of them down in the uniform shop. VERY tough machines. My old Brothers machine will sew some pretty heavy stuff. I have sewn cargo straps and such to make heavy duty tow cables. Get the correct needle for the job. You want genuine Singer needles for heavy dennum and such.

George, for as much as you're going to be doing, one of these will work fine and save you a bundle. http://www.strapworks.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AWL&gdffi=75adc32a4ac64f3cb74a75211f6315bb&gdfms=C0A5BFC4A241431CB76D697A14A9A599&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ECI%20-%20Google%20Shopping%20-%20All%20Products&utm_term=1100405048772&utm_content=All%20Products%20(existing)

I use a Consew 206RB-3 Upholstery sewing machine.
They have these machines used on E-bay
A very good machine for sewing leather, or vinyl seats.
Sews straight stitches only, no fancy stitches.
I have used this machine on some tough things that I should have known better then
to use it on but it did what I ask it to do. It would sew straps without a problem.
I use a T-69 thread which is a medium size nylon bonded thread.
I have used a T-135 thread which is a heavy thread on 1 job

Another thought. Real heavy and high speed machines have a walking foot. Hope that is the correct name. It actually goes up and down with every stitch. Makes perfect straight and pucker free seams. Nice but pricey.

I have a Juki Industrial sewing machine, It will run circles around most of the others, got lucky picked it up at an auction for $250.00

Will sew what you are looking at easily.
