Leveling Box

Hi guys, here's the butchered leveling box that came with mine and Dad's N. The gearbox was seized, but I got that loose, spins like a champ now. Only thing now, as you can see, is the shaft at one time must have broken. The horse's @$$ that owned it back then must have not needed it for it's original purpose so he just welded where he wanted it. My question: Is it repairable? And if so, HOW? Isn't the lower arm and fork a press-on job?

OOPS! Forgot pics! Here ya go!

post a farther back pick.. it looks like you have some missing pieces.

the crank box has a threaded rod which scres in and out of a cast hollow lower fork.

i have seen the threades on both pieces wear and people weld them up.. however they can be fixed.. you cut a hard bolt or allthread and weld it on in place of the damaged thread rod, then you cut some of the fork down and weld a big hard nut or long connector nut to the top of the fork, then grind to contour.. repalce grease fittingg, and chase the threads all around.. lube and go.

here's one I did for my N that had been welded.. works fine..

close up pic shows a nut welded on and the transplanted threads..

In the long run it would be easier the replace it then to try to fix it. Common to see those welded like that or in many other ways due to the treads stripping out of the bolt tread area or other such things going wrong with them over the years. Back years ago people had to do thing in any way they could to get by and if things keep going like they are with the economy it may end up getting that bad or worse very soon.

you got that right.

i used to try to change out broken parts with new or good salvage ones, then at my leisure, repiar the broken parts and put them on the shelf for when needed. i find myself using up those shelf parts fast now!!!

Yep and if the economy keeps going like it has been for the past 10 years it will be very soon when the guy who owns things out right will be in fair shape but those who owe $$ will be hurting just like it was back in the 30s. Just wish I had to $$ to get a little more ready for when it happens. Would love to have a still set up for fuel and a few more 55 gal drums filled with used oil etc. Of course there is also that date they say it will all end at 12-20-2012 we will see if it is as said or if it is hog wash like the 2000 thing and computers

Just a point of interest here, being one of those guys who "fixed" the 2000 year problem, I can tell you that lots of stuff would have broken. But, most companies got their acts together, hired a bunch of people to keep their systems running, and nothing bad happened.

So the 2000 thing wasn't exactly hogwash, it was just a little overblown up by the media.

the worst part was that they predicted that systems setting on people's desks were gonna fail.

I relaize there may hav ebeen server issues and whatnot.. but as you said.. and army of it people kept them going.. however everybodies home pc setting there didn't suddenly keel over when the clock thing happened. i don't think i know of a single case of a y2k failure from dated bios. and I think i had an old 286-12 and some 386 boxes still operation and on years of uptime when that ball dropped.. and nothing happened... os kept the time advancing fine...

that 12-20 thing don't bother me.

people been making up dates for the end of time since time began.

and if it does end.. me having a closet full of dry beans and ammo won't prevent the world ending.. :)

however.. it may help with civilization ending.. which is wht i fear.. not the world ending... :)

Ok, thanks guys, I guess a new leveling box is in order now. I don't have the tools or materials to fix it right now, but as stated, it will go on the shelf for a later project. Thanks again!
