Lift Question

My new Holland dealer told me how to adjust the lift on my 49 8n, sometimes it didn't want to lift things so he said to loosen the 4 bolts that holds the lift handle on and slide it back, I did this and the lift works perfect now, have not had any trouble with it not wanting to lift. After doing this though the lift is different than before, in position control and my forks on, they go down to about 3" from the ground and that's it, if I want it to go all the way down I have to put it in draft control, is this normal? Before I adjusted things position control would go all the way down like draft does.

Remember, if it was an issue of not lifting at all, it was likely a sticky control valve issue, and not can pin wear. Your quadrant move has made up or modified distances for can follower to can pin fit.. which is why you may see different heights.

Play with it- Put it back where it was or move it forward a tad or two and see what happens--won't hurt a thing..You might find a sweet spot where all is well..

Yes it is normal. Moving the quadrant aft compensated for internal wear but changed some of the geometry. If it works for you leave it alone and do the work around. If you want it more close to the way it was made you will have to remove the lift cover and replace the cam follower pin and readjust the position and draft control rods.

That's called the quadrant adjustment. It's covered in both the operators manual & the I&T FO4 manual. If you own a 60+ year old tractor,it's a good idea to have the manuals; even a toaster comes w/ a manual. Check out tip # 39 at the link.

The standard 3-point lift arm "balls" should lower to about 8-1/2" above ground and raise to about 34-1/4". Total lift range is 25-3/4".

As others said, that adjustment compensated for wear in the cam follower pin. If you're not happy w/ the results, you'll need to pull the top cover, adjust the internal linkage & replace the cam follower pin.

Post back for more assistance if that's what you plan to do.

ewer FO-4 manual says that when adjustments are completed, that you lower touch control (system in POSITION ctrl mode) & measure distance from balls in lift arms to ground. Then switch from Position mode to DRAFT mode and check the amount of drop of the lift arms to ground. If additional drop measures more than 3 inches, then the position control spring adjustment is too long.
Now, I expect that with careful adjustment/experimentation, that one could zero out the 3 inches. My belief is that the 3 inches or part of 3 is there by design, so that as things wear, that there will not be a tendency to shift from Position to Draft control during that last part of lowering, when one is in Position mode.
