Lift Yoke Thread Problem

I bought a new lift yoke from this site. It threaded with perfect ease for about 1/2", and then it stopped turning freely. With modest force I could get a few more turns, but that was it and I didn't want to mess up the linkage inside. The old yoke threads freely until it bottoms out so I assume the threads on the draft control rod/plunger are fine.

The problem is that I cannot thread the new one on far enough to take take out the slack. Even with a few washers I need at least 3/8" more.

Its hard to see inside, but I can see no obvious problem with the threads. I haven't found anything else with that thread to try it on.

If anyone has a brilliant solution that would be great. Aside from that, my question is about the threads. The new one is advertised as 5/8" 24 threads per inch. Is this what it should be? If so I assume it wasn't threaded quite correctly and perhaps if I can find someone with the right tap and I can clean it up enough to work.

You are not ever likely to find anything with that
thread on it ever again ! On the TEA 20 it is
supposed to be Cycle Engineers Institue thread , CEI and is
5/8ths'' at 26 tpi.
Best to ask the suppliers of the new one what is
used in it to see if it is a match

It's a TO30, I forgot to say the first time. I checked with the seller who said he checked the rest on inventory and they threaded well. Perhaps mine is a bad one. I think I'll probably exchange it for another.

If, however, that does not work. I would assume that means the plunger threads are bad. But, as I said, the old yoke (with TO-54? on it) threads perfectly on my plunger.

If I were to need a new plunger for a new yoke, can the plunger be replaced without removing the lift cover? If so I could just buy a matched set of new ones and be done with it. Thanks so much for helping with my dumb questions.

Welcome to the world of trying to make Ford N series parts fit
a Ferguson. That yoke is a replacement for an N series ford.
You probably would have buy the matching plunger to make
that yoke work and yes the lift cover has to come off to change
it. What is wrong with your old yoke?

The picture shows the wear on front. The one side in particular doesn't have much metal left. The hole is also slightly elongated over the years. Many uses, such as plowing, mostly just compress the yoke. But some uses put some weight on it. So while ordering other parts I figured I'd get one since I saw them listed for a TO30.

Is there a way I can tell what will work when I buy? Someone advertised a used Ferguson yoke (twice the price) and noted it had 24 tpi which is what this new one was supposed to be. Are the threads subtly different on a Ferguson plunger than a N plunger? Or something else different? Can I trust people selling ones for a Ferguson to actually be for a Ferguson?

If you could find an original Massey replacement part it would
probably fit fine. As far as the wear, everyone I have ever seen
is worn like that. Mine is worn like that and I use it most
everyday for everything. Does it hurt anything? Nope. Having
the spring and yoke adjusted properly are probably more
important than the wear.

See the wear in mine?

It is my main raking tractor and the rake puts a load on the lift and if you hit a hump in the ground it pulls against it but no problems.

To follow up, mostly for future archive searchers trying to learn more about their Fergusons....

I returned the lift yoke in question. The parts man was helpful and checked it with the plungers they sell and it threaded perfectly. In accordance with what was mentioned earlier, it seems likely to me that at least some (maybe all?) of the OEM Ferguson plungers won't fit the aftermarket yokes available.

I'll follow Jason's advice and keep using mine. If/when it does break I'll replace both plunger and yoke simultaneously.
