lifter/valve adjustment

So I'm in need of lifter/valve adjustment on my 8n motor. Does anyone have any idea about clearance specs as well as step by step process?

Thanks in advance.

0.010-0.012 int and 0.014-0.016 ex [b:9aad2d56d3]cold[/b:9aad2d56d3]. Early Ns did not have adjustable tappets, but most got them on 1st valve job. You had to grind the valve stem or the valve seat, to set clearance. You can upgrade to adj tappets.

Get the Ford tools to hold the tappets, there is a right and a left. You also need to modify a 7/16" open end wrench to fit in and do the turning. You can do this with a grinder and file. I used a good quality combination wrench I'd got at a garage sale, and it stays with the tappet wrenches.

You need to make sure the rotating assy is in proper position when you adj each valve, that is valve is closed and tappet on round portion of camshaft. Safe bet is compression stroke TDC for each cyl valve pair.

I did mine years ago when I had to change the manifold, lots easier to get at with that out of way.

Someone had done the valves in the past and installed the adj tappets, mine is a 40 9N. It tapped like a typewriter before and still sounds smooth as a sewing machine now.

If you don't have adj tappets, you need tools to pull the valves out to change to adj tappets. Might as well do a valve job too then.[/u]

Check to see if your block has been drilled to aid in holding the tappets without the need for the crazy tool.

Good point.

You might have adj tappets [u:d274dcddbc]and[/u:d274dcddbc] the modified block. I'd forgot about that tip, but read about it here.

But the tappet tools aren't really crazy, and work OK if you get a real OEM ones.

If I remember, the open end wrench needs to ground thin/thinner width, and a little taken off the outside of each open end face on the outsides. Not sure if that's clear? If I have time tomorrow I'll snap some pictures.

When I adjusted the lifters on my 9n,it seems as though someone had read the specs for the spark plugs. A
lot of adjustment later, all done and not so bad a job,but I did have the engine on a stand.
