Look closely at pic and you will see the light in my hayloft. Bulb burned out so I hired 3 members of Mankato East hockey team to build a bale tower so I can reach it. It wasn't as big of job as it looks as I have a conveyor they kept raising with them. I was running the bales up off the wagons. Took 4 loads. At age 71 after the 4th load I was about dead and them? They could have done 4 more loads and still go to practice after that.

Anyway I told you that so I can ask you this...what kind of bulb should I put in there? It has a globe so I have some size restriction but I want bright as I can and it needs to come on pretty fast.

Any quality LED with lots of candlepqoer and about 3000 Kelvin colour should do fine, and never have to be touched again in your life. Make sure you get one that has a broad light pattern, not the 'spot' style. Maybe beat to test it out on a dark night before you take down your bale tower.

While you have the bale tower you can buy more than one way to spit single socket for 2 or more bulbs. That way if one burns out you still have light until the boys get by to help you. It would take less than half a load to put me on the ropes and down for the count.

With the quality of bulbs now a days I would have bought a ladder. And just stacked the bales around the ladder so that the ladder is in place all the time.

They make a light bulb grabber/turner that mounts on an extension pole. With that and a ladder or take a ride in the tractor bucket to get higher. The bale elevator works as a ladder to except heavier.

Isn't there a concern sometimes with heat build-up when using LED bulbs in enclosed fixtures? Seems like I heard or read that one time.
I believe the heat on the circuit board (that controls the bulb) is what burns out LED's. The LED itself never goes bad, it's the circuit board controller that gets too hot and burns up.

I believe the cheap LED bulbs are worse for this. More expensive LED bulbs will have better heat dissipation and quality circuit boards.

YMMV

Not at all convinced that he is doing anything wrong. I installed 7 sealed/water proof LED fixtures around my property a few years ago and today, only one lights. They are NOT forever lights.
I suspect the sealed fixture is the problem, it contains the heat. We don't have any sealed fixtures.

???? We have been using LED bulbs ever since they came out, and have never had one fail! What are you doing wrong?
Russ, what would you say is an average price you pay for these LED bulbs that don’t burn out or last noticeably longer than an incandescent bulb? Do you get them at big box home improvement stores or the like or do you use some other supplier? I also have not been impressed by the “promised” longevity of LED bulbs. I buy from BBHI stores as mentioned above. I don’t but the cheapest box of them on the shelf, but I will also say that I don’t seek out the most expensive one to buy either.

I know in the grain elevator they weren’t allowed to have the led because of a higher static risk. I always thought it was weird he could have the big hot incandescent bulb but no led you could pull out with it on and not burn your hand.

I have bought bulbs in many places, and they were all cheap! Our local Re-Store had 4-packs for $2, but I haven't had any fail so I haven't bought any for awhile. I just noticed Menards has some 60 wat eq. a 16 pack for $5, 100 watt eq 10 pack for $5. We're still using some compact florescent that just won't die. The only expensive LED we ever bought was for our range hood, it is a little special.
