the three position switch on my C is shot (will not move when force is applied) would an auto parts store carry the same switch if asked for a three position light switch like the one i need

no, a three postion swith at auto store is not the same. you can make one with a swithc and resistor, or you can buy one on e-bay. Some of the dealers and aftermarket guys sell them also. The resistor is needed to get the generator to charge the correct current. If you have an alternator, or you have a voltage regulator on your generator, then you dont need the factory switch with a resistor.

a double pole double throw swith and resistor will work. when up, you have voltage to the lights on one side and ground the F wire on the generator. When switch is down, you run F thru the resistor go ground, and no lights.

when you remove it you will find that switch is probably OK, but the shaft has rusted in the bushing. Do not try to turn the knob, it will break. There is a locking nut inside that will remove the bushing and the switch as 2 seperate pieces. You can get the shaft free with some soaking in Blaster. Then you don't need a new switch. Bob
