Live hydraulics?

I have a Farmall M with behlen 201 live power steering. I am looking to see if I can make it so I have live hydraulics and power steering at the same time. or if I can add a second live pump off of the distributor drive? Maybe run the hydraulic pump to old lift all tank for a reservoir and use that then run the power steering to there as well maybe?

I recommend a single distributor drive based pump, BUT-- The tractor needs to be 1951 and 1/2 to have a tougher gear on the cam shaft, and the correct bolt pattern for the later pump. if earlier, the whole front cover, and cam drive gear needs to be changed to later models. Then use a priority valve to split the flow to the PS. Jim

I'll look tonight what year it is I can't remember off the top of my head. Is it possible to use the existing pump or does it not make enough pressure to do anything more than the power steering?

Looked it's a 1945

That pump is low in volume and pressure, so not much value used for both. Even the IH pumps are at 12 to 1400psi and modest volume. A PTO pump (though not live) can do real work. Jim

Hello Gavin, welcome to YT! Just FYI, your power steering “torque generator” in the steering shaft is a Char-Lynn brand. They were more often pressured by a belt driven pump that sat above the governor on the left side of the engine. It used a reservoir like the one you have but it was mounted to the left of the valve cover towards the front of the engine. A Behlen torque generator is too bulky to fit under the hood. They were mounted in the open shaft in front of the gas tank/back steering shaft support. My 48 M has the belt driven system described above.

Oh okay thanks I wondered why I had a different set up compared to other tractors with power steering.

The answer to your question is yes, with an asterisk. You CAN plumb the pump to a larger reservoir such as the belly pump and use it for both the steering and live hydraulics. Depending on your intended usage and expectations, it may work okay.

That is a Behlen distributor drive pump which is somewhere around 4-5 GPM. So it's not going to set any speed records.

The important part of the system is a priority valve. This divides the flow of the pump, giving the power steering what it needs and sending the rest on for other functions.

Okay sweet I was thinking I would plumb it into the old lift all pump and try it out!
