Loader cylinder leaking

Hello all, I bought what I was I told a JD loader, not sure what year, 1970s maybe. It has a leaking cylinder on one side. I thought I would be smart and replace the seal in it, but I can"t figure out how to get the old seal out. I am going to try and get a picture of it on here tommorrow so yall can see what I am up against. It has a seal on the rod, but nothing to get ahold of and pull out. It does not have a slit in the side where you can pull out the wire spring, and it looks like the seal is covering the nut that holds it all in. The other end is welded, so thats no help. Any help at all would be appreciated. The cylinder is a 3" and the rod is 1.125" I think. It is about 3 feet long. Thank you.

Ever thought of taking it to a JD dealer?? You need to buy the parts anyway.

I was hoping to stay away from a dealer for work, only go to them for parts. I have no way to haul it yet.

Can you find a serial # plate on loader.

If it is a 148 or similiar loader, there is a wire ring or snap ring (can't remember which) that you take off right by the rod seal on the cylinder. Then you push the end of the cylinder INTO the barrel a couple of inches, then there is another wire ring in the barrel that you remove, then you can slide out the whole assembly

Just a guess though if that is the kind of cylinder you have

Could you please furnish the service manual number of a JD frt end loader? I think I've not seen one before.

I took time to look on JDparts.com and to my surprise they offer a tech manual for a 148 farm loader. Please accept my apology.Jim

my ancient #35 came apart similar to the way that Kevin described.

The local stealer will always be glad to let me look at the schematic if it means selling me the parts.

You can buy the replacement parts at any location that services cylinders,here in Rockford we have a place called Great Lakes Hydraulics,I have rebuilt several IH cylinders for less than $40.00 for parts including all the seals and piston rings and wipers,you don't have to go to the dealer,just take the cylinder off and take it apart,they can mic. the cyl.and piston to get the right parts,it's not Rocket Science.
