Loader cylinder

Had a 544B loader cylinder explode, no welds or leaks prior, just pushing manure and put a little down force on it and boom.

Some obstacle must have gotten between the frame and the barrel, so that the barrel couldn't swing downward with the loader boom. Usually it will bend the rod, but with an internally threaded barrel, there is no support around the outside of the barrel like there would be if it had a retainer nut screwed onto the outside of the barrel, or a cylinder head welded on the end with a bolt-on gland.

Hard to visualize anything in the pocket under that cylinder that would not have been still in there now.

I would quicker think a combination of metal fatigue, the gland backing out and cocking along with a possible over pressure issue.

What is the dark spot in broken area of the barrel in the last two pictures?

I replaced both lift cylinders two or three years ago, one from one salvage yard and the other from a different salvage yard. I don't remember which one was put on which side. Looking the cylinder over now and the front half looks to have been repainted. Very possible this one came off a burnt machine, they must have resealed it and threw some paint is my best guess. I would think the heat could have compromised it, maybe maybe not, I have been using the machine for piling manure, stacking bales, and pushing snow probably two hundered hours the past few years since putting the cylinders on and no issue.

What is the round object under the cylinder in pic 2? And it looks like a stone in 3.
I believe you are seeing the ground through the opening in the bottom of the "pocket" the cylinder is mounted in. I may be missing it but I don't see anything in that area that could have been trapped under and damaged the cylinder.
