Loader plumbing late 3020

I have a late (side console) 3020 in the shop and the owner wants to hook up the loader valve direct instead of using the tractor outlet. I
plan on adding a fitting to the hose suppling the rockshaft. It will be easy as it has a hose already. Where should I run the return? I could
add a fitting to the hyd. filter cover but would prefer to add a fitting somewhere else. On the early tractors I add a fitting to the
rockshaft return line but on the side console tractors this would be much harder. The best option might have been a power beyond but we are
trying to save a little money on this one. Thanks Tom

Which trans does this 3020 have? If it has Powershift I'd just route return to trans case due to trans pump continuously pumping oil no matter if foot clutch pedal is depressed or not. If Syncro-range I'd route oil to hyd filter cover.

The easiest and correct way would just add the power beyond plate between SCV and rock shaft and connect your two hoses. You could dump return to filter but if your going to have to modify original filter can / cover or purchase a ported cover just do it right and use the PB plate as it was designed to do. DW

Even if it was a power shift with live transmission pump system will be slower than if you return loader oil to functional return circuit. The
hydraulic piston pump will flow more oil than the transmission pump can supply. By utilizing the PS constant and adding the functional return
from loader valve, it will all most double hydraulic pump flow. Loaders can use all the flow you can provide. Bottom line, do you want a 10 GPM
system or a twenty?? DW

This topic comes up every month or two. In modern view you can search the past discussions like: 4020 loader plumbing . Here is one discussion with pictures.

Several yrs ago I installed a JD 158 FEL on a '67 4020 with Powershift trans. Tractor owner wanted to install/attach joystick valve as cheap as possible. I attached FEL valve hose to tee fitting by line close to brake valve & returned oil to reservoir. Tractor owner stated FEL operated plenty fast enough to suit him handling rd bales while loading/unloading from trailer. YMMV

I think you are on the correct route.
The power line needs to be teed on the rockshaft supply line, like you are planning on doing.

Then for return, the cleanest and least expensive is to drill and weld a fitting on the rockshaft return line. I believe it should also be possible to drill and tap the rockshaft housing on top of the the return fitting, but this is more risky.

I had a 3020 late done exacly like that.

The PB block was not designed for 20 series. It was made for tractors with the priority valve integrated to the rockshaft housing inlet fitting. (40 to 44 series gen2 tractors).
Big minus, PB block will not allow you installation of the rockshaft covers...

If attaching FEL valve without utilizing a PBY manifold I agree with fdt860 to weld a hyd fitting on rockshaft return line to attach FEL valve return hose

Auxiliary outlet manifold(PBY) is listed in 4020 parts for serial #> 201,000. Rockshaft cover needs to be trimmed when installed with AU manifold but can be installed
