Loader valve

I recently purchased an Oliver 1800A at an auction. The tractor is in great condition, but I purchased a used Dunham Lehr loader for it and I am having trouble with the valve. The loader works fine, but I can't get fluid to return to the tractor when the loader isn't being used. The valve is a Cross brand. I believe that my tractor is an open center hydraulic system, not sure, and was wondering if I need an open center type loader valve. I think my current valve may be closed center, but not sure about that. The loader will work, but when Im not using it the fluid pressure builds because its not returning to the tank on the tractor. I removed a plug from the valve that allowed fluid to flow through when the loader isn't in use, but the loader won't move when I use the lever. I replaced the plug. I don't want to damage my hydraulic pump. Any help would be appreciated.

Many loader valves are convertible from closed to open center or vice-versa by swapping out a plug.

Can you post a photo and/or otherwise identify the valve you have?

Open center, yes. I dare say you have it figured out and what you have there is a closed center valve for a Deere
or something newer.

Get the numbers off the valve and look it up in the Cross catalog. Probably can find it online. Or just googling the number should find you
something.

You probably need a 'power beyond sleeve' for your valve. We had the same problem when installing a loader on a Ford 3910 years ago.

With the power beyond sleeve you still have to use the 'out' outlet for a return to the resevoir. Where are you getting the fluid from to feed the loader valve? Not familiar with Olivers.
