I'm building a light-duty loader for my YM1500 and I am going to bolt the belly bracket using bolts that are going through the frame into the engine block. I just had a couple questions. There are four holes, but only two bolts. Are the existing bolts long enough to use with a piece of steel plate between them and the frame, and are they any kind of weird thread that I need to know about? I know I could just check, but I'm at work and I would like to get new bolts on my way home if they're something that is readily available.

You will need to get bolts that are the thickness of your plate longer. Too long and they will bottom out but the existing bolts will be too short. Tearing out those threads in your block will make for a bad day.

The existing bolts are 12mmx28mm 1.75 thread pitch. There are 3 metric pitches in that size.

I'm an engineer and my buddy is a welder (which means we both think we know everything about this) and we've been arguing about the best way to do this for a month now. I'll win since it's my tractor but it's helpful to see how other people have done it.

Because Yanmars aren't really made for loaders they don't have actual frames except insofar as the central drive system serves as one. Thus, without a subframe, something can break when you're lifting, usually the bell housing.

Patrick, no idea what your design is but an FEL = sub frame. These were engineered for rice paddy's with no thought or need of lifting anything off the front end and are pretty much bullet proof. I, like others would like to hear what your ideas are for a mod.

But more seriously, yes I am building a subframe. In fact, the argument between my buddy and I is where to attach it in the back. I want to fabricate a bracket to attach it to the rear axle, and he wants to attach it to the bracket for my top link on the three point hitch. I don't want the weight that high. I haven't found your pictures yet, Alan, but I am looking for them.

I'm not planning to use this loader for excavating work. It will be mostly for carrying around mulch and compost for my wife's very large garden and for cleaning up brush that I have mowed and raked. I would occasionally use it for limestone or gravel, but that's more the exception than the rule.

I used two 6" lengths of angle iron (I think 3") to lock it to the axle.

Alan, what you did is close to what I have in mind, but I was thinking of using rectangular tubing. Do you have any problem with that steel flexing? Did you add any cross members?

No to both questions. I used barstock because its strength is in the plane needed. Good luck.
