Loading a broken truck

RedMF40

Not from Iceland!
I need to get this on my trailer today. Appreciate any tips for getting it done safely and not breaking anything more.

Is there any advantage to taking off the wheel on the broken side to help with steering? I’ll have floor jacks and a trailer winch and all the regular tools. Thanks in advance. Gerrit

AAA is a suggestion if you can't get your truck on a trailer.
I have AAA. Yes it is expensive but who do you call when your vehicle needs a ride home?
I have a 100 mile tow package.
The coil went bad on my truck.
AAA has never left me stranded. I put the truck in the garage and replaced the coil

I don't know why I have to explain that AAA is a suggestion if you can't get your truck on a trailer.

My 2018 car doesn't have a spare tire.
I may not get my money's worth but what is the price on peace of mind?
One time the power steering hose broke on my Terremite,
I put a strap on the center link to steer and towed it with my Kawasaki mule a few hundred feet to put it inside the pole barn.

You could put a strap on the center link like I did with my terramite to steer with, pull the strap sideways.

Once I get it in the barn I used the loader to lift the front wheels and kicked the wheels in the direction I needed to go.

Good Luck

Line it up with the trailer, drive it on. The mistake people make is not stopping BEFORE things go caddywompus. If the truck wants to walk off the ramp, STOP, BACK UP, RESET. Don't keep going until the truck is completely off the ramp and high-centered over the side of the trailer.

There's no advantage to taking the broken wheel off. Floor jacks and their tiny wheels do not transition well from pavement to a trailer ramp, or from metal framework to wood decking, or vice versa.

BTW, I had AAA and it was worthless. My truck died in the apartment complex parking lot. They would not pay for the tow because it was "home."

My brother in law had AAA and his truck died in the amusement park exit at 7PM last summer. Hours would go by. When he'd call for a status update, they couldn't find his case. Twice. Had to give them all his information AGAIN. Twice The tow truck didn't show up until midnight.

Several years ago at our flying field, a kid's car wouldn't start. He had AAA. Called them, and the tow truck came right away, but because the car was "off road" they would not come and get it. We went to push the car out to the road, but the tow truck driver took off when we had our backs turned. Called AAA again. Told them the driver left. They apologized profusely. Kid told them not to send *blah* towing service. We sat there until almost midnight with this kid because the car was inside the lock gate and we needed to make sure the gate was locked after the car was moved. Guess who showed up? The same a-hole that took off on us before.

if it drives drive it on. if not put in neutral and pull it on.

I had to abort. So much rust and the wishbone was digging into the ground. I tried a few different things, including driving the truck onto the ramps. It was a giveaway from the friend of a friend and I can see why he wanted it out of his life. Might make a good driveway plow truck if there’s anything to attach the suspension to. Thanks for the suggestions.

Almost forgot this: the truck’s owner, a nice enough fella, told me the battery was low so it wouldn’t start. Ok, I can deal with a dead battery. Well, in addition, the hood release doesn’t work.

Let’s take a look. While he worked the hood release inside the truck, I pushed down on the hood thinking this might pop it open. Something that has worked before with other vehicles. Nothing doing.

I checked the hood release in the truck, pulled on the big handle that said HOOD in very large letters.
Popped right open.

He’d been pulling on a little piece of metal for the parking brake release. The handle marked HOOD was a little to the right of it.

What does this have to do with hjs question?

I usually just jack them uo get 2 planks under the wheel /tire and us a pipe between the planks you can also steer it by turning the pie. I add a second pipe before it comes off the first so it can keep rolling along. I also use a long plank for the bottom one to get on the trailer then use the floor to roll on if it is stout enough. If not then a board will usually work since it has the floor foe reinforcing under it. These are hard wood planks so not much of any crush into the wood. Oak or Ash even Elm and they all work good for this.

I had a girlfriend with AAA. When her car's timing belt broke on I-95 she called one AAA office. They told her she needed to call another AAA office. She called that AAA office and they told her to call the first AAA office. She called me and I went and got her.

I had AAA and once blew a high-pressure common rail fuel line on a Cummins on the NYS Thriway on a Sunday night. Didn’t have to wait very long. Loaded on a rollback and to the nearest exit. I paid a little extra to have the driver drop it off at a dealer and me to a hotel. Decent service, I thought.
