Lock nuts on piston rods

After reading many responses I'll be reusing the olds nuts but use them with locktite. I can't find locally and all the 8N Tractor suppliers seem to be out of them. Would you guys trust they will stay in place? Thanks for everyones response. I really appreciate it.

You have the old nuts. Get yourself a SMALL bottle of Loctite 242 (blue)thread locker and follow the directions on the label. They will stay in place. Or use the 272 (red) formula and drive the next guy batty when he tries to get them off ;-)

PS> Just to be clear I was assuming you were talking about reusing the old hex nuts. Unless the threads are damaged you can reuse them. But trash any old PAL (lock) nuts you may have removed and use the thread locker in their place.

You have put a lot of work into this and you dont
want to take a short cut as it could make for a
bad outcome. My understanding is these nuts are not for reuse.I would get the correct ones new. I
would not use the old ones. Have you checked with
NAPA they use to have them and also other N parts.
Are you in Mineola IA?

Using the old rod nuts is the last thing I worry
about when installing the pistons and rods. I have
probably done in the neighborhood of a thousand
old used rod nuts and have never had any problem.
Never used any locktite.
Torque is important too. I have a learned torque
built into my elbow!
Probably more than a thousand!

Zane your one of a kind I always love your replies you give no quarter and ya tell it like it is. Your one of the last home schooled engineers left, if you say use old nuts and no locktite well you done a lot more then I have or will ever do. Do you really just torque by feel? or is that a tongue in cheek.<9))))>{

Does it go click click like my new fangled torque wrench does when it hits the correct torque? lol.

After I got out of the AF working on the mighty 4360 CI radial engines I didn't use another torque wrench for at least the next 10 years. Reason being, I didn't have access to one.

I have one now but still don't use it on anything but head bolts. I use it then because I'm afraid I might break something. You can't get head bolts too tight but if you keep going you will break something! :O)

Did you know that head bolt torques are different for N heads held on with nuts and studs and bolts???? Less for the nuts because of the pitch of the threads on the studs. You can actually get the stud and nut heads pulled down tighter because if this and not break anything.
