Log Splitter 3pt PTO Pump

I don't even have my 8N running yet, but I'm thinking ahead on utilising my tractor mount log splitter.

I have a 3 pt mounted log splitter that I used on my former MF-180 Massey tractor with auxilary hydrolics. I am trying to figure out what I need to convert it so I can use it on my 8N.

I know I need to setup another pump with a tank for fluid. Add the usuall filters etc.

I found a pump and tank at Northern Tool. Links follow.

Total pump and tank cost around $600

Is this worth the effort and cost, and will it perform as good as the MF-180 setup did?

Sell the rig you have and use the money down on something with a Briggs or Honda on it.

UD.....thats the RIGHT answer. Modern splitters with independent engine is so much better and uses less fuel too. You can even gitt'em with 3-point hitch pins to haul around on yer tractor .......Dell

At 11+ GPM it will most assuredly perform better than the 4.8 GPM pump on the MF-180 :shock: I have used my Kubby with a 4 GPM pump to run my splitter and I know how slow that is :!:

Is the PTO pump worth the cost? Not to me - it ties up the PTO and gives you very little. If you want to drop that sort of money on the 8N better off spending it on an engine driven pump for a live hydraulics upgrade. For $600 you could even add a pump with sufficient flow to run 10 GPM remotes for the splitter. Live hydraulics + remotes beats the heck out of a single purpose PTO pump. But then I'm biased ;-)

I agree with with U.D. & Dell but if you are determined to run it with your N and it is mounted to the 3 pt you will soon find you want to run your exhaust up and away. (expierance) also need a large gas can.
