I have a login.gov account and don't have a clue what you need? I signed up with a good email address, created a password, answered the security questions and chose text verification,, done.

I have a login.gov account and use it all time for VA. Now ssa wants to also log in with the login.gov account. When I try the want to verify that I am me. I tried on line and they couldn't verify and have to do it in person at P.O. I am supposed to get bar code to take to P.O. along with other ID. I can't figure how to get it. I thought I am following directions. I guess not.

They send me a verification text, I guess you don't text thus you have to do it done other way? You can still log on to SS the old way or create an account there if you don't have one

Bar code should be emailed to you.

When you start the process on Login.gov, you can choose to verify your identity online, or in-person. If you want to verify in person, select, ‘Verify your identity at a Post Office.’

Please have the following information ready to enter on Login.gov:

  1. Your State-Issued ID
  2. Social Security Number
  3. Your phone number
If you’re unable to complete any of these steps, please contact the partner agency’s help center for support.

Bring the following items to the Post Office

A copy of your emailed barcode

Once you complete the steps on Login.gov, we’ll email you a barcode and a deadline to go to the Post Office. You can print the email, or show the email from your mobile device. If you go to the Post Office after the deadline, your information will not be saved and you will need to restart the process.

Your driver’s license or state ID card

Bring the same ID you used to enter your information on Login.gov. Your ID must not be expired. At this time, only the following state-issued identification is accepted:

  • Driver’s license from all 50 states, the District of Columbia (DC), and other US territories (Guam, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Mariana Islands and Puerto Rico)
  • A non-driver’s license state-issued ID card
    • This is an identity document issued by the state, the District of Columbia (DC), or US territory that asserts identity but does not give driving privileges.
We do not currently accept any other forms of identification, such as passports and military IDs. You cannot verify your identity at the Post Office without a state-issued ID. We’re currently working to add more ways to verify your identity.

In the meantime, please contact the partner agency’s help center to find out what you can do.

Complete the process at a participating Post Office before your deadline

In-Person Proofing is available at participating locations across the U.S. and some U.S. territories.*

When you start the process on Login.gov, we’ll help you find a list of participating Post Offices near you. You can also search for a Post Office near you in our Help Center.

Once you’ve received a barcode online, you can go to any Post Office where In-Person Proofing is available.

* Available U.S. Territories: U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands.

You can speak with any retail associate to verify your identity

  • Wait in line at the Post Office. The retail associate will scan your barcode and review your ID.
    • Tell the retail associate: “I received an email telling me to get this barcode scanned at this Post Office” or “I’m here to verify my information/identity”.
    • If the retail associate still does not know how to proceed, you can request a supervisor to help you.
  • After the retail associate has reviewed your documents, you’re done at the Post Office. The retail clerk will not receive your results.

We’ll email you with next steps

You’ll get an email within 24 hours of visiting a Post Office. We’ll tell you if your identity verification was successful or unsuccessful. Check your email for a message from [email protected].

If your identity verification was unsuccessful, you can:

  • Try to verify your identity again, either online or in person
  • Contact the partner agency’s help center for support
If you do not receive an email from us, there are a few steps you can take:

  • Check your email’s spam or junk folder for an email from [email protected].
  • If you haven’t heard from us after 24 hours from your visit to the Post Office, please contact Login.gov customer support at login.gov/contact.

So you CAN get a bar code to take to the Post Office on your smart phone or you HAVE TO HAVE a smart phone to access the site?

Or have a printer to print it.

I have mine set to home phone call, and it is quick as soon as you click it phone rings gives you code, slowly gives you numbers to type in.

OP must have had problems setting up the verification so now they want a in person verification, ie barcode to post office and prove you are who you say you are. Just as a one time verification . After the Post Office visit the OP should be able to set up the Two Part authentication to use text or phone call, password app, facial or fingerprints, a physical security key or a list of security codes. Or use what ever they already have when they log in to login.gov for the VA.

I haven't used a smart phone in conjunction with login.gov, other than to receive text messages. So no, you shouldn't need a smart phone.

Does not appear that you HAVE to have a cellphone of any sort per the instructions ARC posted above.

You either print out the barcode received via email or you pull up that email on your cellphone, your choice.

It says my phone isn't associated with me so they can't verify me. I have had this phone # 18 years. I found a old previous phone # and tried that and it took that. Only problem is I don't have that any longer and I assume it is sending verification to that # which I don't have to get the code.

Are you the phone account holder or are you on a family plan with someone elses name on the account?
