Looking for Deere

I am trying to find a small tractor with a belly mower. Not a lawn tractor/mower something comparable to a Farmall Cub. Did JD make something this size? Maybe I could get a model name or number to search for from you.

The L series has a mid mount sickle bar mower but without a rear PTO set up a midmount deck mower would not work well. You could really have to farmerize something together on an L series tractor. Why not look at an M or MT. They are about 20HP, can run a 5 foot bellymower like a Woods L59, and are readily available. Parts are easy to get, still easy to work on, and are good tractors. I own both an LA and MT and I would much rather try to put a belly mower on an MT than an LA. It would be cheaper, look better, and work better. A 5 foot mower is really a lot for a tractor like an LA or a cub to power.

Get something with live pto,the M doesn't even have a water pump and will overheat on a hot day of mowing.The L is awkard and won't hardly pull itself.The 420-430 series had live pto as an option and were much better tractor.

I agree with Ray. or you might look for a IH 154 lowboy. I know it's not a Deere but they're good tractors and you see a lot of them with belly mowers on'em. The weight of the tractor is something to consider if the ground is a little wet.

John Deere made the L, LA and LI. They are so desirable by collectors, that I would go with a red one if you are planning to use it. The 4 cylinder engine on the red is much smoother.

The Farmall Cub is too underpowered. Farmall A's are a better fit. Don't see many old JD's with belly mowers. I saw a few H's, B's and M's.

If you dont like red look in to orange. I know a guy that uses a Allis-Chalmers C with a belly mower.It might not be too hard to find one of them.You might look into a ford with a 3 point finishing mower.Just a thought.

I have a good "A" but no way to mount a belly mower to it that I can see. It only has a univ. square shaft off of the splined PTO shaft that goes straight back to the sickle mower I have. There is no horizontal belt pulley attachment on the tractor.
Serial number is on a plate just below the brakes & clutch on the front of the foot platform.
It says Model A - serial # FAA 4618.
Believe it's a '39. Wish I could use it with a belly mower.

Woods still makes kits to mount their mowers on many old tractors, including your A. Here is a link to their site; the mounting kit link is about the tenth down in the list.

Not sure I'd agree that the M can't work hard without overheating. I've run mine hard on very hot days with no problems. Being an early model, the temp gauge will of course max out but that was due to the sender location in a hot spot, not the tractor actually overheating. With live hydraulics and a position-controlled rockshaft they are a very usable little tractor.

The belly mower mounts on your A the same as a cub, mounts back to the drawbar mounting and the pulley for the belt goes right on pto shaft,then the belt is routed down to another set of pulleys on mower mounting and on to the big pulley on the mower..

I agree as well. I have done some heavy plowing with a 2 bottom plow on a 90 degree afternoon for hours with an MT and never had it overheat. Kind of a silly statement, aren't almost all the letter series JD's thermosyphon and without water pumps??

If the JD M is set up properly, it will not overheat any more than any other tractor based on how hot it is and how hard you load it.
The M has a thermoshipon system which has to be filled different than a water pump equiped engine. With a water pump, you can fill the radiator almost to the top. Worst that will happen is a little antifreeze will go out the overflow as it heats and expands.
With a thermoshipon, it needs to be filled exactly as the service manual states. If you over fill it, it will not cool as well on a hot day.
They do run a little hotter by design, but nothing that will hurt anything.
I have yet to have a waterpump leak or need rebuilding on my JD M. LOL

I would suggest looking at some of the newer tractors. I have a JD 790 with a mid-mount mower and front end loader. They are relatively inexpensive and a low hour machine runs around $12,000. I mow a couple of acres a week, snow plow and all the misc yard stuff.

Maybe you would like a 1010. There is one listed in the photo ads. There were also alot of belly mowers mounted on the 3-cylinder 820,830,1020 and 2040 tractors. Woods still makes new mowers to fit these tractors. We use a three blade seven ft. finish mower on the 3-point of our 2040 to mow around our place.

Tom, I have a 1010 and it's a good little tractor. Use it allot to mow open areas but I think it would be to big & hard on the lawn area I would like to mow with it. I am looking for a belly mower for my red "A". I sure appreciate all of the boards help & suggestions.

If you want to use it for lawn mowing consider switching to turf tires. They are wider and have no tread. Add a belly mower and you would like it. JD made special turf tractors with a low profile and wide turf tires in the 820,830,1020,2040 and 2240 tractors.
