looking for help.....

I'm restoring a John Deere model 14 light hay press. Its in excellent condition, except for the springs used on the pulley clutch. They are conical, about 2 3/4" at the base, 1" at the top, and 1 1/2" tall. I checked w/ some spring manufacturers, and they were all too expensive because of the set up fee. Does anyone have an old Deere press w/ these kinda springs they'd be willing to part with, or a suggestion on what would work?

I don't have any live leads for you, but would encourage you to "think outside the box" on this one. Those springs need to be of the correct tension and length, but (perhaps) they do not need to be conical. As such, I'd give some thought to using special washers or bushings to adapt ordinary compression springs that will do the job tension wise. So long as they are all the same no one will ever be the wiser except for you! (PatB)

Hey there - one other idea just kit my crown - perhaps a stop at an implement place where they sell brushhogs would pay off - because most of those cutters have similar type clutches, and may have springs to suit your applications. (PatB)

I appreciate the responses. I've considered exactly what you said, and will keep it as an option. I'm trying to keep everything as original as possible, as this baler is in near perfect shape.(with the exception of the springs!) I've spent hours and hours cleaning up all of the original square bolts and nuts for originality's sake and would like to keep all aspects "right", if I can.
