Low gear swap model As

44 Magnum

Can someone tell me if the low first gear gear sets in a 52 JD A be put in the transmission of a early 36 JD A? The early A has a much higher 1st gear and I want to use the lower gearing of the later A. The parts books call out different numbers, but I can change all parts if need be, but will they fit? I have both tractors, but didn't want to tear them both apart unless there was a chance I could make it work...

The gears will not interchange. If memory serves me correctly, the shaft spacing is different. I personaly wouldn't change to the lower gear anyway. I would put my money and effort into enhancing the engine so it would turn the current gear. If you do want to slow it down, the easiest way is to swap reduction gears from the late (creeper gear) A into the '36 for an approx. 9% slower speed, or 620/630 reduction gears for approx 13% slower. I have never done the 630 gear swap, and was told the ID of the gear on the clutch drum was different from the A gear ID. I've never measured one my self so I don't know for sure either way. My $0.02 worth. Mike

Thanks for the input. The engine is plenty hot... It isn't a power issue, There are just many times I would like to have a much slower speed. So the reduction gear is what I need to look into? So they will interchange?
