Lubricants for D17

I have a D17 that has 2 separate oil/lubricant fill points. Sitting on the tractor looking down, there is a round large cap, which has some sort of filter in it. Is this the hydraulic fill, or the gear oil fill? To the left, there is a 7/8 inch bolt. Take it off and there is a dipstick attached. Does the gear oil go in this tube, or is this the hydraulic fill? I replaced the pto seal as it was dripping a fairly steady stream of gear oil. Both need fluid, but I am not certain which gets what type of fluid. Thanks.

What Series D17 tractor do you have? Series I & II have three fill points, Series III & IV have two.

For Series III & IV: The hex bolt dipstick to the left of the gearshift is the power director/hydraulics in the torque tube. It takes universal trans/hydraulic fluid. 24 quarts S-III, 26 quarts S-IV. The dipstick to the right with the big breather/vent on top is the transmission/differential case. Allis originally called for 80/90 EP GL-5 gear lube. I still run that in mine. Later they said you could also run universal trans/hydraulic fluid there. Just don't mix them. In particular it might be good to drain the transmission if it has not been done in a while. You'll likely get a milky looking bunch of stuff out the bottom. Let it sit for a while to ensure it all runs out before refilling. About 24-26 quarts here I think.

If you have a Series I or II the power director and hydraulics are separate. Hydraulics fill via a fill point on the right side of the torque tube ahead of the belt pulley location. Power director fills in the hex dipstick to the left of the transmission. I think they are about 12 quarts each but not 100% certain. Again both take universal trans/hydraulic fluid.

Thanks. This helps a great deal. I never have figured out the series number of the tractor, but will do some research on it. I"ll see if I can find a number on it. I replaced the pto seal because it had been leaking some. Gear oil did run out, so that would be filled to the right of the gear shift (larger cap) I believe.
