lx277 won't reverse

my JD lx277 now won"t reverse. goes forward fine. the reverse pedal just bottoms out. any ideas on how to troubleshoot? i bought this used with 124 hrs on the clock - don"t know history - ran fine for about ten hrs. thank you.

WIthout knowing what kind of life it had before (or after) you got it, it could be a caouple things. Worn out, linkage, check valve.

Make sure the swashplate control arm on the side of the trans is actually moving in reverse. Easiest way is to put it on jackstands and have a helper sit on the seat and run the pedals.

The other possibility is that a check valve inside the trans is held open by some gunk. There's 2 check valves inside the trans, one forward, one backward. Most likely the reverse check valve has some junk in it, or you're about to lose forward too. Nothing changes from forward to reverse, except the angle of the swashplate that runs the motor.

If you pull the forward pedal all the way up instead of pushing the reverse down. Is there any motion?
