M Alternator belt.

Hi all,

I have been searching this site for a post I thought I remembered about a standard alt belt for my M. I thought I read that there was a belt I could pick up from the local auto store. Does anyone remember this or do you know what the size might be?

Thanks, Andy

Every alternator installation is unique to the tractor. Not only do the brackets get made differently, but there are more than 20 different alternators that can be mounted, with many pulley combinations to get it to spin fast. Measuring is probably best done with an old longer bely and a pruning shears. Cut the too long old belt and wrap the belt around the pulleys with the tensioner loose and the alt. moved to the closest to the looas direction allowed. bypass the belt ends and cut again to get a good length. Take it to town for a match. Be sure to match the angle of the belt with the pulley angle, the appliance belts are way different, and just flip over. The width of the belt is also critical, so do not use a old belt that is worn narrow to cut and measure with. JimN

Andy - I'm going from memory but recall the correct belt is an A33 (1/2" x 33"). Use this info at your own risk however(!)

If you have an old, A-section belt larger than about A36 you can quickly determine the correct size:

First swing the alternator in on it's adjustment as close to the engine as it will go. Now cut the old belt, wrap it around both the water pump and alternator sheaves and back onto itself. Mark the spot where the belt end overlaps. Then remove the belt, lay it out straight and measure from the belt end to the mark you just made.

The length in inches (rounded up to the next whole inch) will be the belt size you need.

Well I guess I can make this all work gentleman, thanks for the replies. Why didn't I take auto in high school??? What was I thinking? :)

I really appreciate the help.

Andy

The last belt we got for the M was a Gates 9375--they have/ had 1/2 inch increments for belts in the 30 to 40+ inch sizes. Measuring as Jim & Bob indicated is best. We made a scissor type belt tightener to replace the original.
