m alternator

can someone tell me what brand , model number alternator to get to convert a farmall m , also ive seen m's that have
just one wire going from alternator to bat .does that actually work or is there a better way
thanks in advance

You'll want to get a 10si Delco alternator. 3 wire set up, get the new plug in as well. I use an indicator lamp instead of a diode.

I have 4 ( Oliver 60,SH,M,SM) useing one wire Delcos. No Complants or problems what so ever.IMHO,the only way to 'fly'.

What don't like about a one wire. Is you have to gun the engine on every start to make the alternator charge.

The three wire will start charging as soon as the engine starts at any FROM.

I have convert three tractors over to one wire alternators all three owners came back and wanted to switch to three wires.

The one wire set up is the only way to go, Call Charlies Repair, he makes the mounting bracket @ belt tightening arm, the belt is readily available, call him, cell 507 438 8172

There are no killer reasons to hate one wire alts. These things prevent me from recommending them: There is often no way to know if they are charging if hooked directly to the battery. They are often not fuse linked to the system. They have (in some cases) current draw that is sufficient to drain a battery in a week (not all, but all remain in some state of on). They often need to be revved to start charging. Jim

When you use the hitachi alternator you can use the original alternator bracket. Just use threaded rod through the generator bracket and nuts to position and of course hold the alternator in place. You will need some sort of adjustment slot for the top of the alternator to tighten the belt. I think I even used the original belt or maybe one size smaller dont remember that detail for sure.

It is my understanding that you get better regulation using the three wire and you can fuse it and not risk a sudden catastrophic failure. One wire senses the voltage and one powers the field windings unless is is a permanent magnet alternator. My uncle used one wire alternators and they never worked right for him so he would just run the tractor and put the battery on charge when he got back to the barn. I have three Delco 10SI alternators and I am going to put them in three wire configuration after having a Lucas starter smoke my brand new carefully soldered and heat shrunk 4 gauge copper lugged + cable. L.P.D.

I just like the fact that a 3 wire will
charge (even a little) as soon as I fire
up the motor. Yeah, it probably will never
turn fast enough to produce 60ish
amps....who cares, the genny never would
do that..I also cheat and put the volt
sense wire right to the batt terminal....

If you have a one wire and do not like it simply pull the cover off the 2 tabs by the top of case and wire as 3 wire. All the difference between one wire and 3 wire is the ceremacic regulator inside. The one wire regulator can be purchased seperatly and put in any delco s10. The high cost of a one wire is a rip-off as my cost for regulators are the same. Often, they never knew difference, used one wire when fellow wanted 3 wire and left blocking cap off

Few more reasons I don't like one wire alternators. First off, they drain battery much faster while standing unused than a 3 wire one does. This causes earlier battery failure due to lower state of charge over extended period of time. Next, very few stores around here stock them so if you need a replacement you have to order one. I carry the regular regulator on hand but never the one for one wire Delco's. Third would be the high revving of the engine to start charging. Only good thing is you can hook a heavy wire direct to starter switch, circumventing all other wires in old poor harness but then you need a "volt meter" added to know if it is charging or not.
